IPv6 for all web hosting accounts

If you are already our client or want to become, starting today, all of our web hosting packages, including WordPress and Magento hosting, have included an additional dedicated IPv6 address.

We like to give good news! If you are already our client or want to become, starting today, all of our web hosting packages, including WordPress and Magento hosting, have included an additional dedicated IPv6 address at no additional cost.

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol that identifies devices on the Internet to locate them. Every device that uses the Internet is identified by its own IP address so Internet communication works. This is exactly the street addresses and postal codes you need to know to send a letter.

The earlier version, IPv4, uses a 32-bit addressing scheme to support 4.3 billion devices, considered to be sufficient. However, with the expansion of the Internet, personal computers, smart phones, and Internet-connected devices, it shows that the world needs more addresses.

The IPv6 protocol can manage packets more efficiently, improve performance and increase security. It allows Internet service providers to reduce the size of routing tables, making them more hierarchical.

NAV sponsors the Hospice House of Hope

Starting August 2014 NAV Communications becomes the main provider of the Hospice House of Hope of the Plumbuita Palliative Care Unit.

We understand social responsibility.

Starting August 2014, NAV Communications becomes the primary internet provider of the Hospice House of Hope Hospitality Unit of Plumbuita, providing it with a 1Gbps connection under the sponsorship agreement.

As an initiative that operates exclusively through volunteer activities, sponsorship contracts and donations, we wanted to support them with one of the most important elements of communication and which to a certain extent provides them with the support to continue to fulfill a noble mission.

We are also here to provide them with all the necessary support for major IT projects where the internal resources or staff competencies are outdated by the scale of projects.

Update 15.09.2014:
Prior to the inauguration of the Hospice House of Hope palliative care unit, we wanted to support the promotion campaign by providing logistical support to support the online activity.
We have provided the Hospice under a sponsorship contract with a number of servers that will play an important role in running the online platform.
Because during the inauguration and next time we expect a great deal of hits, we wanted to be the ones who will support the uninterrupted or latent operation of web applications.

And in the case of Internet networks, the rule is that the shortest way is the fastest way.

The peering agreements IX (Internet eXchange) provide the users of each network converging at that point of peering with ultra-fast access to the users of the other networks present in that IX.

We considered the Balkan-IX as an optimal choice due to the large number of independent networks that joined this IX.

newHOST moves to the NAV data center

One of the most important webhosting companies in Romania, newHOST.net becomes a partner of NAV Communications and migrates the IT equipment infrastructure in the NAV Communications data center.

newHOST moves the infrastructure into the NAV Data Center.

One of the most important players on the Romanian web hosting market partners with NAV Telecom in order to increase their SLA even more and lower their OpEx.

This project was a major challenge for us and for them as well, both in magnitude as well as in complexity.
The newHOST.ro board of management was very pleased with the variety of management features provided for free by NAV Telecom and they enjoyed our non-bureaucratic time and cost effective internal regulations.

Also, the rich NAV Communications Data Center feature set played a major role in taking the decision to move their infrastructure in our data center.

We actively involved both in the planning as well as in the execution stage of the migration, in an effort to minimize the impact on the newHOST.ro users.
We’re confident to say that at the end of the migration process, we used a correct and efficient approach considering the minimal impact the migration had on their service uptime, proven by the lack of any customer complaint..

Because we put a high value on information security, we’ve encrypted the web traffic for navtelecom.ro using a SSL EV certificate..

We went for a SSL EV certificate instead of a simple certificate because one of those is issued automatically with no real person validating the information provided by the applicant.

An cyber criminal could easily obtain such a certificate and use it malitiously, however an SSL EV certificate is only issued after a validation agent goes through a rich set of official company documents.

Update, 01-09-2014:
We’ve required the SSL EV certificate to be reissued and moved from navtelecom.ro to nav.ro

We’re expanding the service portfolio with Cloud Computing

The modern user understood the benefits of Cloud Computing solutions and is migrating to this platform.

The modern user understood the benefits of Cloud Computing solutions and is migrating to this platform.
We are no longer required to shut the services down for hardware maintenance, the concept of unscheduled downtime because of hardware failure is gone, scaling up the resources is done in seconds instead of hours and the data consistency no longer relies on the build quality of an individual hard drive.

To meet our user’s expectations we came up with a complex highly available and highly scalable infrastructure that is the foundation of our world class cloud computing solution.
As with other areas of our infrastructure we opted for proven solutions by using high end servers by Supermicro and Dell alongside resilient storage solutions.

Before launch, we’ve performed an extended set of tests to determine whether the final product will be up to par with our most demanding users requirements.
After successfully concluding our battery of tests we’ve launched the platform that wants to provide a better alternative to the traditional VPS management solutions.

Our cloud computing solution has all the feature set of the traditional one, plus:

* Capacity to run VPS’s wih up to 64GB RAM
* The data is stored on high performance SSD storage arrays
* The uptime gets even higher because we ruled out the hardware maintenance windows
* Automatic failover, it’s enabled in case of an unexpected physical server failure. This will migrate the affected machines within seconds on another standing by node and boot them up there.

Proactive service monitoring

We’ve deployed a new system that proactively monitors the services uptime.

Someone used to say: “There are those who have downtime and there are those who know they have downtime.”
In a modern standard data center, built to run on Tier 3 standards it is paramount that every incident either minor or major to be promptly brought to the attention of the right persons with maximum precision in respect to the exact point it occured.

The traditional monitoring system only alerts about an outage with no clear indication on where exactly it occured.
Another major issue of the basic monitoring systems is the large number false positives, mainly relying on a detecting a one-time fault between points A and B.

The modern monitoring system perform a thorough analysis in case of unusual behaviour. If configured properly they know how to determine the exact point a fault occured, moreover they are capable of running concurrent tests from multiple points to rule out false positives and pinpoint the exact problem.
The incident resolution times decrease significantly because the technical support team no longer wastes times on investigating the incident or worse investigating false positives.

In an effort to provide flexible service options to our customers, starting January 2014, NAV Communications is present in the neutral colocation center NXDATA-1.
This allows us to easily interconnect with the largest global an local ISP’s..

Due to the new opportunities to interconnect with major providers alongside smart routing policies we’ve managed to lower our OpEx, further increase our SLA, increase our network capacity and lower the network latencies.
The direct result was to be able to come up with lower end-user costs while increasing the quality of the user experience.

We want to consolidate our position on the Romanian IT market by adopting smart and innovative solutions and installing a PoP in the most reputated neutral colocation data center in Romania was a key move.

On Internet which was compared by many with the Wild West, it is critical that your services get top protection from the agressive DoS/DDoS attacks targeting them. While a DoS is generally easy to detect and to block, the latter is a more sophisticated and more aggressive type.
A DDoS attack is carried by hundreds or thousands of computer owned by unsavvy users who have no idea that their computer is infected by a virus that’s invisibly making their PC a part of a massive group of computers under the control of a cyber criminal.

A DDoS attack typically means “bombarding” a certain target simoultaneously from hundreds or thousands of sources with mailitious traffic. An unprotected server won’t cope with that traffic and will become unavailable within seconds. Some of these attacks can go on for days. Just imagine the impact on your business if your site would be offline for days in a row.

The smart firewalls constantly analyze the inbound traffic and they react immediately in case of unusual behaviour (traffic spikes) by determining the type of attack and blocking it. The malitious traffic is discarded while the legit traffic passes unrestricted. This way your services remain up and running during the attack.
Astfel serviciile dumneavoastră rămân operaţionale pe toată durata atacului, fără să vă afecteze în niciun fel.

In November 2013 NAV Telecom deployed on of the best DoS/DDoS attack mitigating solutions on the market that uses an advanced protection technique called Traffic Scrubbing.
Due to security concerns we are not able to disclose the details of the setup, detection rules and mitigation actions.

NAV opens its first colocation facility

NAV launches its first colocation room built upon the Tier 3 standards.

CITEŞTE MAI MULT

On 5th of November 2013 NAV Telecom launches its first colocation room in its brand new data center. The planning and execution stages were performed by a team of highly experience engineers specialized in data center development.

Our aim was to prove that top quality services can be provided at an affordable cost but for this to happen we knew that we mustn’t make any compromise in any of the development stages.
We went for high capacity diesel generators, APC UPS units from the MGE Galaxy 5500 series slighlty oversized on purpose, an N+1 redundant HVAC system, Dell racks and a fully redundant internal network using high end Cisco equipment exclusively.

Feel free to schedule a visit in our Data Center Data Center

We’re moving in our privately owned headquarters

After a careful analysis of current economic factors and a coherent long-term development plan, the NAV Board of Directors decides to build its own headquarters.

After a thorough analysis of the current market conditions and after drafting a long term coherent development plan, the NAV Communications board of directors came in March 2011 to the conclusion that the best approach in becoming a key player on the Romanian IT market is to be able to offer competitive service costs while keeping the SLA at a very high level. A key component of this plan was to have low OpEx.

As such we decided that instead of transfering the traditional businesses costs of office rental to our customers we should build our privately owned office building.

Update, 10-08-2013:
On 10th Aug 2013, NAV Communications moves its office operations in its brand new office building and establishes its headquarters there.

IP Address space and AS Number assignment

As of today, 10th August 2012 we’re offering IP Address space and AS Number assigning services.

NAV Communications is an accredited RIPE NCC Local Internet Registry (LIR), thus authorized to assign IPv4 and IPv6 address space and AS numbers.

IP - IPv4 and IPv6 address ex. 91.250.240.1 (IP nav.ro address).
The IP address is a unique number that the hosts in a network use to “talk” to eachother using TCP/IP.
Any host on a network, be it a computer, router, server, network printer, IP phone etc. must be identified by an unique IP address.

Please see our IP Address space allocation offer.

AS (Autonomous System) Number e.g. AS6718 (NAV Communications's AS Number).
An autonomous system is made up of a group of networks that use the Internet Protocol. This group is maintained by one or several network operators using a single clearly defined routing policy. When the routing exchange occurs with the outside, each AS is identified by a unique number (ASN).

Please see our AS Number assignment offer
